Adult Catechism
There are classes in Catholic doctrines for adults, every Thursday (with some exceptions), at 7:30 p.m. in the parish hall of Holy Family Church.  These classes are taught by one of the Fathers of the Oratory. They are meant for inquirers, those intending to be baptized or received into full communion with the Catholic Church, and Catholics who would like to deepen their understanding of their faith. There is no fee. There is no pressure.  Feel free to join the classes at any time

Baptism
Parents of infants are urged to get them baptized in the first few weeks after birth, in order to set them free from the guilt of original sin and to give them a new birth in Christ.  Please contact the rectory of Holy Family Parish or Saint Vincent de Paul Parish to arrange for your child’s baptism.
Adults, teenagers, and young children who have attained the age of reason (approximately seven years and older) can also be baptized; or, if they have been validly baptized outside of the Catholic Church, they can be received into full communion with the Catholic Church. Please call either of the two parishes to discuss your situation with a priest.  Or, start coming to the Adult Catechism Classes and talk to Fr Michael Eades.

First Confession and First Communion
Children usually receive these sacraments when they are in grade two. Although the family and the school are indispensable to the religious education of children, the immediate preparation for the sacraments is the responsibility of the parish.
There is a program of catechesis for these sacraments at each of the Oratory’s two parishes.  Enrolment takes place early in September (see the parish bulletin for details). Classes begin in late September and continue until these Sacraments have been administered at some point in the spring.  If your child is in grade two or above and has not already been registered in this program, please contact your parish as soon as possible.  Click here for registration forms.

Confirmation
Young Catholics usually receive the sacrament of confirmation when they are in grade eight. Although the family and the school are indispensable to the religious education of youth, the immediate preparation for the sacraments is the responsibility of the parish.
There is a program of catechesis for confirmation at each of the Oratory’s two parishes.  Candidates for confirmation are usually enrolled in September and classes also begin in September and continue until the sacrament has been conferred at some point in the spring. If your son or daughter is in grade eight or above and has not already been registered in this program, please contact your parish as soon as possible. Click here for registration forms.

Marriage
Couples planning to be married must contact a priest well in advance of the wedding date. They must also receive personal preparation for entering a marriage.
If either party has previously gone through any form of civil or religious marriage with another person, the priest is not permitted to set a date for the wedding until the Bishop’s office has been consulted.
It should be noted that Catholics, in order to marry validly, must marry before the parish priest or his delegate and two witnesses.  A civil marriage or a marriage before a non-Catholic minister (unless a written dispensation has been granted by the Bishop’s office) is not a valid marriage.  Couples in such ‘marriages’ should contact a priest to have the situation rectified.
The Oratory provides a course of marriage preparation at least once a year.  Although the timing of the course is chosen to accommodate couples being married at Holy Family or Saint Vincent de Paul, the course is open to all.

Holy Orders

Are you being called to the priesthood or diaconate? The Fathers of the Oratory would be pleased to discuss these vocations with you.

Anointing of the Sick (‘Last Rites’)
This sacrament is for all those who begin to be in danger of death because of sickness or advanced age. Although it can be administered even to the unconscious who are on the point of expiring, people should not delay in receiving this sacrament. The sacrament is a completion to the life of penance and it strengthens those, who on account of their illness, might be tempted to despair. It is not a sign of giving up on the sick; rather it is a sacrament of hope.
Please call the rectory of Holy Family Parish or Saint Vincent de Paul Parish to arrange for this sacrament.  In case of emergency, do not hesitate to call at any time.  Remember too that we bring Communion to the sick and otherwise shut-in on the first and third Friday of every month.  Please call the rectory to arrange for these visits.
