Christ holds the\u00a0scroll that contains his teaching in his left hand while gesturing (as teachers do)\u00a0with his right. Now in the Pio-Christian Museum in the Vatican, this sculpture\u00a0most probably adorned the garden of a wealthy and cultivated convert from\u00a0paganism. Christianity here comes to light as a teaching, and Christ as the teacher\u00a0who provides the definitive answer to the age-old question: how best should we\u00a0live? Thus Christianity is seen as falling within the continuum of the ancient quest\u00a0for wisdom. Yet the sculpture also indicates the raw and shocking newness of\u00a0Christ\u2019s teaching, for the teacher here is not the venerable sage, but a young man,\u00a0an adolescent with long flowing locks, eternally young, fresh and vital.<\/p>\n<p>By:\u00a0Fr Thomas Trottier, Cong.
